IN MEMORIUM The Grand Chapter of New Mexico announces, with sorrow, the passing of Worthy Grand Matron Mary L. Owen Entered into rest April 26, 2008
Sister Mary was born October 29, 1932, in Dallas, Iowa to Minus and Florence (Ream) Cleair. She married Porter T. Owen July 15, 1951. She received a bachelor's degree in fine arts from St. Mary's College in Maryland. Mary then served in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Tom, of the family home; a son, Thomas W. Owen and his wife Nedra, of Missouri; three daughters, Deborah Seals and her husband Lyle, Jacquelynn Steele and her husband Rusty, and Mary Hermann and her husband Pall, all of Missouri; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd Cleair, of Atkinson, Illinois.
There were two great loves in Mary's life. The greatest was her family, and the other was the Order of the Eastern Star. At her passing, Mary was the Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Jurisdiction of New Mexico Order of the Eastern Star. Mary will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but we know that she has only been gone for a short time and soon we will join her.
Mary was initiated in Troy, Missouri in 1967 and served as Worthy Matron in 1971. On moving to New Mexico she affiliated with Tularosa Basin No. 72 and served as Worthy Matron in 1994. She served as Grand Representative to Scotland, Grand Librarian, on the Education Board, and as District Instructor. She entered the Grand Line in 2005.

IN MEMORIUM The Grand Chapter of New Mexico announces with sorrow the passing of Past Grand Matron Mary Alice Sackett Worthy Grand Matron 1969-1970 Entered into Rest April 19, 2008
Sister Mary Alice, born in Dawson, New Mexico, was the daughter of Donald G. Secrest and Adelaide Secrest. She was a graduate of the University of Denver. After graduation she taught in the Santa Fe Public Schools for four years. She met Verne Sackett while he was attending the School of Mines in Socorro in 1940. They married in May of 1941. They lived in Arizona their first year together and then moved from place to place during the war years, where Verne served as a Navy Lieutenant. In 1947 they came to Taos, New Mexico. Her daughter, Shirley Svoboda, husband Grady, and granddaughter, Pioma Svoboda, all live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Our Sister was initiated at the age of 18 into Juanita Chapter No. 28 in Dawson. She affiliated with Taos Chapter No. 55 in 1952 (after Juanita Chapter consolidated with Cimarron Chapter No. 64) and served as Worthy Matron in 1956, and again in 1965. Since 1957 Mary Alice was an active member of the Grand Chapter, having served as District Instructor, Assistant Grand Warder, Grand Martha, and Grand Chaplain. She was elected to the Grand Line in 1966. As Worthy Grand Matron she presided at the "Pathway of Beauty Session" in 1970 with Dr. Wesley M. Drury as Worthy Grand Patron.

IN MEMORIUM The Grand Chapter of New Mexico announces with sorrow the passing of Past Grand Patron Odell “Red” Fortenberry Worthy Grand Patron 1990-1991 Entered into Rest February 14, 2008
Brother Odell was born August 3, 1931 in Groesbeck, Texas and moved with his family to Silver City, New Mexico in 1940. He attended Silver City schools, Western New Mexico University, Commonwealth College of Sciences in Houston, Texas and received a degree in Mortuary Science. He served 2 years in the US Army during the Korean conflict, mostly in Alaska. He was employed by Curtis Funeral Home and Phelps Dodge Corporation at Tyrone, where he retired in 1992.
Brother Odell was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men’s Club. He was a 35 year member of Silver City Lodge No.8, AF&AM serving as Worshipful Master 3 times and as Secretary for 6 years. In 1983 Odell was honored with the Mr. Mason of the Year award. He was a member of Scottish Rite Masons of Las Cruces, York Rite Masons, Grant County Shrine Club, and Balut Abyad Shrine Club of Albuquerque. He was a 35 year member of Silver City Chapter No.3, Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron 10 times and as WGP with Betty Lou McNair in the United Hearts Session, 1990-91. He served on the Tyrone and Silver City Rainbow Board and DeMolay Advisory Board.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sue; one son, Terry and wife Jean, of Silver City; two daughters, Cindy Nemo and husband Kenny of Tucson, Arizona and Sydney Suzell Fortenberry of Grand Junction, Colorado; five grandchildren, four great-grandsons, one brother, two sisters, numerous nieces and nephews, loving in-laws, and many sorrowing friends.

IN MEMORIUM Floyd W. Heer Worthy Grand Patron 1965-1966 Entered into Rest December 30, 2007
Brother Floyd was born August 6, 1919 in Galena, Kansas. Floyd served in WWII and received several ribbons and bars, as well as 4 Bronze Stars.A year after he returned from the war he married Marceline Gispon in Baxter Springs, Kansas on November 25, 1948. The couple immediately moved to Santa Fe where Floyd was employed at Riley Brothers Trucking Co., Jack Adams Construction, and eventually worked as a state auditor for the NM State Highway Department. He retired in 1986.Our Brother was raised in Joplin, Missouri and became a member of Montezuma Lodge #1 AF&AM, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, and Ballut Abyad Shrine. He was a Life Member of Santa Fe Chapter No.19 and served as Worthy Grand Patron in 1965-1966 during The Melody of Love Session with Helene Fisher.His wife Marceline preceded him in death on December 25, 2007. They were soul mates until the end. She was a Past Matron of Santa Fe Chapter No.19 and a past Mother Advisor of Santa Fe Assembly #10 Order of Rainbow for girls.They are survived by two daughters: Lindsey and Jack Giessinger of. Hayden, CO and Laura and Clyde Hill of Santa Fe and two grandsons: Aaron and Danelle Shell of Santa Fe and Cutlar Shell of Columbus, Georgia.These two Eastern Stars gave their time, talents, and love to our Order. They will both be missed and we all pray for the family left behind.
